Vestibular disease refers to a sudden, non-progressive disturbance of balance. It is more common in older dogs. Causes of vestibular disease include middle or inner ear infections, drugs that are toxic to the ear, trauma or injury, tumors, and hypothyroidism. When no specific cause is found, the condition is called idiopathic vestibular syndrome.

These central disorders are usually due to brain stem or cerebellar degeneration or dysfunction. Central nystagmus will present at rest as down beating, up beating, or pendular nystagmus. Vestibular migraine frequently presents as a diagnostic challenge as objective neurological findings consistent with this entity have not been well described. Objective: The aim of this study is to characterize eye movements of patients presenting with nystagmus during attacks of migrainous vertigo.

Nystagmus of central vestibular origin may be vertical, horizontal or rotational. Therefore spontaneous vertical nystagmus suggests that the lesion is in the central  Signs of vestibular disease include: falling, rolling, tilting of the head, circling, nystagmus, positional strabismus (deviation of one eye in some head positions),   Cigarette smoking was shown to give rise to obvious changes of the vestibular nystagmus pattern and these changes were ascribed to central influences. Spontaneous nystagmus in a patient with a recent right peripheral vestibular lesion. Bitemporal leads; upwards pen deflection denotes eye movement.

Vestibulo-ocular reflex and nystagmus is described as rapid, repetitive, involuntary eye movement. Memory Anchors  Repetitive exposures to vestibular stimulation alone markedly reduced the time constant of post-rotatory nystagmus and this effect was accompanied only.

Vestibular nystagmus

Nystagmus is a back and forth movement of the eyes with the eyes often moving one direction slowly and the other direction more quickly. As presented in Table 2, nystagmus can assist in the diagnosis of central versus peripheral origin. Vestibular nystagmus may be central or peripheral. Vestibular Tests & Measures: Study Guide Nystagmus is described by the direction of the quick phase. Rotary / Torsional N. is described by the direction that the superior pole of the iris moves, L or R. This type of nystagmus is generated by vestibular asymmetry, and it can be due to an inhibitory disorder like vestibular neuritis or an excitatory disorder like benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), said Dr. Gold. Nystagmus may be optokinetic (eye related) or vestibular (inner-ear related), and it can be either congenital (present at birth) or acquired due to injury or disease. In most cases it appears during infancy or childhood, but it can develop in adulthood.
